THE TOP TEN (handheld/mobile)...
10. Wild Chords (iPad App)
A clean UI and it functions well. From a young child to ageing adult a great edu-game.

9. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo 3DS)
Like a successful Bubsy 3D, seriously. It is the Mario you know but perfect for the 3DS.

8. 1000 Bornes (iOS Universal App)
Really fun card game made into a convenient and fun iPad App.

7. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo 3DS)
Refining the formula to perfection and lightly introducing new elements. Good and easy online experience.

6. Tiny Wings (iOS iPhone)
So simple but so fun. Engaging graphics and music. Can be used to relax as much as it can be a videogame.

5. Curling3D HD (iPad App)
Good physics and all the fun of the real game. Great way to play on the go and the best iOS simulation of the sport.

4. Sid Meier's Pirates! (iPad App)
A perfect game for five minutes or five hours that you can take on the go. Well suited to the iPad for the most part.

3. Shadow Era (iOS Universal App)
CCGs are a favourite of mine. I enjoy the challenge and building decks but do not enjoy the interaction. Until an iOS Yu-Gi-Oh comes out this is the best out there.

2. Jetpack Joyride (iOS Universal App)
The videogame version of "Tiny Wings". Excessive fun and full of compelling bonuses and side missions.

1. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (iPad App)
Music is the main element in this remix/deconstruction of videogame and storytelling tropes. Timeless gameplay married with story, sights & sounds; the best!

THE TOP TEN (home consoles)...

10. N/A
9. N/A
8. N/A

7. Driver: San Francisco (PS3)
Fun, engaging and weirdly justified story and gameplay. Amusing dialogue and maps.

6. Dead Space 2 (PS3)
Solid sequel of the gameplay I enjoy & I think all the story & characterisation stuff really makes it an improvement & I am interested and invested enough to want to know what is next.

5. Saints Row: The Third (PS3)
Not as good as the second one; which worries me; but loads better than anything Rockstar makes. An open world thrill!
4. Infamous 2 (PS3)
A successful superhero game & a successful open world game, this PS3 exclusive is the Unicorn of videogames.

4. Infamous 2 (PS3)
A successful superhero game & a successful open world game, this PS3 exclusive is the Unicorn of videogames.

3. Catherine (PS3)
In the midst of silly Anime clichés, is a really story with real depth and subtext as the icing between a pretty sweet action puzzle game cake.

2. Assassin's Creed Revelations (PS3)
A great game only made less great by the fact that we are one game away from having been back to the well too much. The gameplay is getting stale but the story is without peer.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Nintendo Wii)
A reinvention of the wheel. It is the first real motion game and darn fun to boot. A spiritual successor to Wind Waker and while the overworld is not as sweet the rest is pure gold.

THE TOP TEN...

11. Selena Gomez & The Scene "When the Sun Goes Down"
Just wanted to mention this album because I listen and enjoyed it so much. Good pop.

10. Eddie Vedder "Ukulele Songs"
I love the simplicity, honesty and warmth of the Ukulele and Eddie's voice. They blend so well and so satisfyingly.

9. Marketa Irglova "Anar"
A cool lo-fi indie pop album by a lovely girl with a haunting voice.

8. Mates Of State "Mountaintops"
A blast of fun. After slowing down on the last album, this one burst with high energy dance pop with sublime boy/girl contrast vocals.

7. Avril Lavigne "Goodbye Lullaby (Deluxe Edition)"
Not for the taste of most but I love her voice and I think the songs on this one are all a lot stronger than they were last time.

6. Miranda Lambert "Four the Record (Deluxe Edition)"
This gal just makes great albums full of songs I want to listen to over and over.

5. Steve Martin "Rare Bird Alert [with The Steep Canyon Rangers]"
I love me some Martin and some new banjo music, this has both! In spades.

4. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks "Mirror Traffic"
With Beck at the knob, this is the most digestible and least "wanky" Malkmus since Pavement. I love it!

3. Eisley "The Valley (Deluxe Edition)"
Trading magic for heartbreak but worth it to get the edge from the original EPs back. I always thought the studio stuff sounded too polished, this is great though.

2. Kathryn Calder "Bright and Vivid"
Her first CD kind of changed my life, so this one took a while to grow on me but grow it did. It sounds like going through issues but in a GREAT way.

1. Ellie Goulding "Lights"
Terrific and unique voice and not a weak track on the entire album. Really resonated with me this year.

BONUS:
Top 10 songs of the year (with videos)...

10. Hamster song from the KIA Soul advert (http://youtu.be/4zJWA3Vo6TU)
I saw this advert and thought, "What an amazing song!" then I heard the whole song and thought, "What a boring terrible song!" So in the end, I just like this advert and the clip of music from it.

9. Lady Gaga “Born This Way” (http://youtu.be/wV1FrqwZyKw?t=2m50s)
Super catchy song with fun choreography. I am positive I like this kid's cover version better... http://youtu.be/J5ftgv3BHd0

8. Rihanna "We Found Love" (http://youtu.be/iVkaRlDrF_4?t=50s)
So redundant, so catchy though. I only like Rihanna in fast tempo, generic dance beats mode.

7. Eleanor Friedberger "My Mistakes" (http://youtu.be/jjK-Ab8t7Ug)
Great song. I love the space-y vibes and the lyrics. The video is so foxy and suits the words well. I feel slightly bad I would have chosen "Roosevelt Island" http://youtu.be/V4h51YBt2lA if it had a sexier video.

6. Glee [Lea Michele] "Firework" (http://youtu.be/PAwhn-QJ6PY)
I could have chosen "Rain On My Parade" as well but this one always ALWAYS makes me cry. I love Katy Perri songs but cannot stand her voice and I LOVE Lea Michele's voice so this works out best!

5. Selena Gomez & The Scene "Who Says" (http://youtu.be/BzE1mX4Px0I)
I might be kind of a sucker for self-impowerment songs but I think this one is special and sincere. So infectious too.

4. Kathryn Calder "Right Book" (Not on YouTube, here is her personal site: http://kathryncalder.ca)
I love all the songs on this album but this one just sounds like someone dealing with something, it is so heavy. I really dig it! Her latest video is quite lovely quite different... http://youtu.be/s5ijtdj4EdQ

3. Eisley "I WIsh" (http://youtu.be/Vh5YAFZPIMQ)
I could have gone with any song on this album so I just chose the one I most like singing along to. Fantastic album!

2. Ellie Goulding "The Writer" (http://youtu.be/H-ru2glqXAg)
Off my favourite album of the year is this, my favourite song off it. The lyrics and the way she delivers them... so moving. The live acoustic video is pretty good too... http://youtu.be/1SsLnNazxY0

1. Miranda Lambert "Fine Tune" (http://youtu.be/mgDawr8WvnU?hd=1)
The sexiest song of the year and my favourite to boot! The way it was produced... it is just oh so delicious!

THE TOP 10 (plus one)

11. INSIDIOUS
A modern yet classic haunted house tale with a twist! Despite all those buzz words this is a legitimately scary and great film.

10. BRIDESMAIDS
A end to end laugh out loud film and a win (finally) for Paul Feig. My crush on Kristen Wigg only grows as she showcases her talents.

9. FOOTLOOSE (2011)
I do not like the original. This remake takes the story and makes it relevant, fun and engaging in a way the original never could.

8. FAST FIVE
Only Tom Cruise could steal the best action film title from the combination of Vin Diesel and The Rock. This flick is Bad Boys II levels of fun and fury.

7. FORKS OVER KNIVES
I admit this doc is very "dry". BUT, the information is so direct and serious that I have to pay attention. The truth is all this film needs and it has it in spades.

6. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
A very cute and very referential and; most importantly; very funny film! A real comedy comedy framed by lovely Parisian nights.

5. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL IMAX
Amazing visuals and vistas and a perfect paring of script and director. The first film that I feel was enhanced by IMAX more than any 3D film the immersion and tension is incredible.

4. BEGINNINGS
A tender touching film with incredible acting from its leads. The film maker's touch so deft and light, a work of art and honesty and truth.

3. RED STATE
A blast of a film that gets better and better on repeat viewings. The twists and turns pause only to let the actors and their ACTING shine.

2. PAUL
This film is homage not parody that succeeds from the nerdiest genre fans to just someone who wants some laughs, tears and a good story a lot to love.

1. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
This is the most fun I had at the cinema. A successful reboot of a beloved franchise. A great popcorn flick that also provides loads of conversation material long after you have left the theatre. Thought provoking and terrific.

24 January 2011

2010

Here is a list of some of the things I did with my year along with the order in which I appreciated it...

***LIVE EVENTS***
[Probably forgetting/missing something here...]

THE TOP TEN...
10. 24 January - The Shit Show at Eureka Theatre
I do not think I have laughed as much at a live show as I did at this one. In addition, the appreciation I gained for Thomas Lennon (who I already adore) and Chris Hardwick (who I now love). Funny!

9. 18 July - The Swell Season, She & Him, Bird And The Bee at the Hollywood Bowl
She & Him sound so good and so confident now, this is the best I have ever heard them. In addition, The Swell Season were headliners in order as well in talent. The SS were always a great live show but this was their best as well, the way they made a giant show seem like a private set.

8. 14 April - Sia at The Regency Ballroom
My favourite voice in person as well as recorded. She is consistently my favourite live act to catch. Those amazing songs with her extra amazing voice would be enough to blow me away; but her kindness and cuteness of banter push her into unheard of realms. Exceptional!

7. 22 April - Conan O'Brien's The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour
After missing my Conan fix I was so happy to get the funny and the rock all in one live spectacle. The mix of improvisation and scripted material all in the realm of zany Conan inhabits. Hilarious!

6. 10 August - Weird Al Yankovic at The Warfield
Hearing all the songs I have loved all my life and laughing to some new ones was such a thrill. This man alone took a room packed with 20-something cynicism and turned us all into silly, wacky, *weird* fun-havers. Stupendous!

5. 30 January - The Pee-Wee Herman Show at Club Nokia
If the rule is “you nostalgia, you lose” I lost hard. This was like crawling into my childhood and having it explode off the television screen and onto the big stage. It was so cute and so fun and evenly slightly cheeky, but simply a joy throughout. Brilliant!

4. 6 April - Taylor Swift at Pepsi Centre
The girl has songs. Now she has a voice and a stage presence, this was a hell of a show and brought smiles, tears and lusty thoughts all in one night. Incredible!

3. 3 February - Fiddler On The Roof starring Harvey Fierstein
I love the show and the music but Fierstein plays it just perfectly, he mines all the pathos well enough, but the humour he infuses into it. Amazing!

2. 26-27 November – Weezer Memories Tour at Gibson Amphitheatre
Weezer [blue] and Pinkerton are two of finest albums ever made and two you would never expect to hear in their entirety, but here is was. I cite the Los Angeles show because I VIP-ed it and got to meet the band more than twice; I walked through sound checks and they walked past me. In addition, it was a celeb fest, on stage and in the crowd. Fun!

1. 18 December - The Weakerthans "All-In"
This was such an amazing and long show. The whole trip up to a very snowy Winnipeg was all amazing, but hearing all my favourite songs sung by my favourite band in their hometown was too much. Sublime!

***VIDEOGAMES***

THE TOP TEN...
10. Jeopardy & Wheel Of Fortune (Wii)
Two separate games. I love Jeopardy and WOF is fun to play. The way Wii Speak and player Mii are integrated is so cool. All the hosts and announcers are right there voicing everything and even though everything is given the “Mii” treatment it all works.

9. Game Dev Story (iPhone/iPad)
This game is so simple and so addictive. I should not like it, I should loathe it, but it is a lot of fun in bursts that keep getting longer and longer… like crack is.

8. Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror: Remastered (iPhone/iPad)
I love this series so much! So happy to have the first and second on my iPad at all, let alone remastered and lovely!

7. Trauma Team (Wii)
So many ways to play, so much fun! A crazy very anime story that actually well connects all the different medical procedures this game has to offer. It is like a bunch of full-featured games in one.

6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
Lean mean Mario. There is no fat, and very little story, but some of the most inventive level design in *any* Mario platformer. A gorgeous game that is also a lot of fun, this is one of the best single player experiences of the year.

5. Rock Band 3 (Xbox 360)
Each RB gets better and better and this may be the pinnacle, the zenith of plastic instruments party games. Keyboards adds a lot of fun and difficulty and the pro-mode of all that stuff works so well and makes the game feel new. The soundtrack is amazing and varied, awesome.

4. Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii)
Amazing graphics worked into such aesthetics as to really sell the yarn theme throughout all the game’s menus, levels, world map and etc… it was such a joy to play all the way though. This is something I feel everyone needs to experience at least once.

3. Heavy Rain (PS3)
Plot holes, awful voice acting and a constant visit in the uncanny valley… yes, but also transcendent gameplay that can uniquely affect you in a way that will make you actually feel; a flawed masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless.

2. Alan Wake (Xbox 360)
An incredibly paced game that is equally adroit at setting a mood of dread and discomfort. I did not know what to expect from this game, but what I got was an awesome action/adventure set in Steven King’s dream. The ending was a blow, but I want more, bring on the sequel!

1. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Xbox 360)
It kind of is a rehash of AC2 but it is so developed story-wise and it has such a huge world that this is not the DLC that the narrow-minded bandy about calling this. Rome is big, there is tons to do, Ezio’s story is completed and the main story is really pushed ahead… there is no better game I played this year end of story.

***BOOKS (technically iBooks on my iPad as that is the only way I buy/read)***
[I just started keeping track in November so this list is pretty meager. In addition, this is only for books *released* this year which reduces the list when I catch up on older things.]

THE PURCHASE LIST...
[For reviews go to my Good Reads... http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/4722574]

1. "The War For Late Night" Bill Carter
2."Unbearable Lightness" Portia de Rossi
3. "Freakonomics Revised Edition" Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner
4. "An Object Of Beauty" Steve Martin
5. "The Sherlockian" Graham Moore
6. "Spider Bones" Kathy Reichs
7. "Virals" Kathy Reichs
8. "Packing For Mars" Mary Roach
9. "The Bedwetter" Sarah Silverman

THE TOP TEN (erm...) FIVE (yeah! That's the ticket!)...

5. "Virals" Kathy Reichs
I love the Bones series and the installment this year was not only good but set in Oahu it set up places I wanted to go on my trip around those parts… this on the other hand is all set in North Carolina and you meant to appeal to the “Twilight” generation… and it works! This book was so interesting and so respectful to the intelligence and tolerance of youth that as an adult I love it too. It was just a well told first tale in what hopefully will be a continuing series in tandem with Bones. So refreshing, like fizzy water for the imagination.

4. "Unbearable Lightness" Portia de Rossi
A great read, it is magic and the “trick” comes subtly over the course of the entire book until the last few pages where you are hit and your way of looking at the world and yourself changes. An amazing read that I think should be mandatory for at least women, but maybe everyone.

3. "Packing For Mars" Mary Roach
All the most mundane and overlooked minutiae of making space travel a reality is explored here. Now you may be telling yourself that logistics pertaining to NASA does not sound like an endlessly captivating subject… but it is!

2. "The Sherlockian" Graham Moore
This honestly could have been my number one. It is so bloody good! The way it blends an Agatha Christie murder/mystery in one timeline with the creator of Sherlock Homes as the protagonist while having a Sherlockian one set in the present is astounding; the fact they coalesce and play so well is all the better.

1. "An Object Of Beauty" Steve Martin
A book of humour and value and worth that encompasses all those things is a rare treat and yet here it is. With authority it takes you though all facets of art collecting and appreciating never dumbing it down but deftly keeping even the cheap seats in this weaving story. A master class on writing women, in appreciation and weariness of, and just a wholly absorbing good time.

***MUSIC***

THE TOP TWELVE...

12. Jewel "Sweet and Mild [Acoustic] / Sweet and Wild"
I got the deluxe set which includes the country album and the entire album as just voice and guitar which really make it just sound like a Jewel album. I dig the country one with its lavish production, but the acoustic version really lets her voice and writing come to the forefront. A wonderfully expressive album and a good one to keep on repeat.

11. JP, Chrissie and the Fairground Boys "Fidelity!"
A lovely jumble of pop-rock with the smoky sexy cool voice of one Chrissie Hynde holding it all together. This is a warm album that sounds as fun to listen to as it must have been to record,

10. Court Yard Hounds “Court Yard Hounds”
An amazing and amazingly rootsy sounding country record. Forget about that pop they try to call country, this is down home country and it is good! I have no listened to it as much as I would like but I love it so much.

9. Ben Folds "Lonely Avenue"
Ace writer guy Nick Hornby brings some lovely self-contained story lyrics for Ben to play with. There is that which will make you laugh out loud, cry or sometimes both in the same song. This is a classic pop record with some genius pedigree putting it together.

8. Belle & Sebastian "Write About Love"
Twee-pop that knows how to have fun. B&S are the tops when it comes to records that make you want to shake your arse. Taking the album title as a lead to fill this album with choice wordplay inside catchy tunes.

7. She & Him "Volume Two"
That beautiful voice on its own is so lovely it could bring Paul Bunyan to his knees, but the words she writes mixed with the jangly low end guitar of M. Ward is just heaven. Another collection of catchy tunes in the vein of classic 60s lady pop. So fierce and so fun and sometimes a little heartbreaking.

6. Jimmy Eat World “Invented (Deluxe)”
A brilliant album, not my favourite of JEW still is super special. There are many songs on this one that are up there with the best they have ever made. This has a very “Futures” by way of “Clarity” vibe in the production. I like how Jim’s vocals in so many songs are counterbalanced by Courtney Marie Andrews’s vocals.

5. Best Coast "Crazy for You"
My favourite new band, this album is so catchy, so fun, and so good! Sunny sarcastic surf guitar fuzz permeates all the tunes that go from upbeat to somber. At times it is 80s Goth rock and at others Dick Dale, just a great time, a great album that I have been listening regularly to since I got it.

4. Weezer "Hurley (Deluxe)" & "Death To False Metal"
I am just going to lump this into one because as much as I like them both I could not decide between them. This may be the albums I listened to the most this year. Just amazingly catchy power-pop and so much the album for solo car ride sing-a-longs.

3. Kathryn Calder "Are You My Mother?"
This album is so tender and so emotive and so fulfilling to listen to. Her honey-sweet and silky-smooth vocals wrapped in a filigree of instruments, complementary. This is such an exciting album full of twists and turns and it just sounds like a day at the beach running in the sand and surf.

2. Sia "We Are Born"
If you are feeling down this album raises you up. An outrageously good singer/songwriter putting out the dance record you always knew she had in her. She is so amazing live and never has it been captured like it is here. Not a techno album, all the dance beats are live instrumentation so it translate well live but here feels more organic to the booty shaking.

1. Taylor Swift "Speak Now"
Oh man, can this girl not only write a song, the lady can produce it and sing it so sweetly. And the songs that come out of dear Taylor is so catchy and infectious and just really makes you feel whatever mood the song evokes. When she sings "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter" or "next chapter" or "She's better known for the things that she does/On the mattress/Whoa" you are just taken away. In the car, at home, *anywhere*... this album comes on and my mouth must sing and my body must dance; this is the premiere pop album.

BONUS:
Top 15 songs of the year (with YouTube link!)...

15. Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWWDm9x48ak
Early in the year I remember hearing this pop-country single and thinking two things: 1) This is an amazing song & B) Who would think to make a sad song about a booty call?

14. Jewel “No Good In Goodbye (Acoustic)”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSlQvWCHzck
I love this album and this song but the acoustic version on the deluxe is so much better to me. The sweetness of her voice over the single acoustic guitar is really spectacular.

13. Belle & Sebastian “I Didn’t See It Coming”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UeFaayyw3o
A great kickoff track for a great album. I love the opening line “Make me dance/I want to surrender…” and the way it is stuck in the backing vocals towards the end of the song.

12. Court Yard Hounds “I Miss You”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QtTHA3y9b0 (all I could find was a live version)
It could have just as easily been “Skyline” or “The Coast” but this is the one that most gets to me emotionally. I like singing along and feeling my heart break, just a little.

11. Weezer “All My Friends Are Insects”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bGRpoL7vqk
This is one of those songs that is super fun to sing and bob along to while driving in your car. The solo is really rocking too, much more then you would expect in a pop song for kids.

10. She & Him "Ridin' In My Car"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpiI2ab6trU
This song is sunny 60s pop vocals blended with bittersweet honeysuckle harmonies and lyrics of appropriate love lost and longing. This song is like a catchy music time machine.

9. Mates of State "Laura"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxaki3cDdD4
When a song starts with turntables scratches, you know you are in for a good time. This song of distance and regret is more impressive production-wise when you here the grody original.

8. Arcade Fire “Ready To Start”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvokOD-EnMw
Driven forward, faster and faster by a propulsive bass line this song pulls you in quickly and never lets up. A moody tune but never does it lag or sag.

7. Best Coast "I Want To"
http://bit.ly/hY85B4
The first half is a slow burn with an even slower build. Within the music and the way she sings you hear the longing of those oh so simple but oh so precious lyrics. Suddenly you are taken into a speedy surf guitar finale. Tops!

6. The Get Up Kids “Your Petty Pretty Things”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6f0KtkUB2o
It has been six years since any new music came from the Get Up Kids, luckily, the first song on their new EP sounds just like the best you ever knew they could be blended with the new production showing their growth. This song leaves me wanting more like this.

5. Jimmy Eat World “Coffee And Cigarettes”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qmc5lOhcfo
There are so many awesome songs on this album, but this is the one that wins/stands out. A real rocker of a song with the male/female vocal counterpoint that makes up much of this album used to wonderful effect here.

4. Kathryn Calder "Castor And Pollux"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcTvUynMc7o
A really addicting pop song with a rocking lead guitar part and Calder’s amazing and beguiling voice at the forefront. Amazing and upbeat!

3. Sia “Cloud”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAMuTsLKEb4
With a voice like a gale you believe it when she sings “I am a dark cloud/swelling with rain”! I love this song so much but the way she just sings the hell out of it is what keeps me wanting to hear it again and again.

2. Taylor Swift “The Story Of Us”
http://bit.ly/hxW9aY
The way this song keeps it youthful energy while lyrically showing a maturity I have not seen Swift show before. I love her voice and the way she sings it and I love the synth-tinged power-pop production of the track. This song pulls you in from the start; all the way through the “next chapter” until “the end” you are fully entertained. A fist-pumper of an anthem!

1. Weezer “Turning Up The Radio”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmhgVFQTIUA
This song is what I would call “my jam”. There is no song I played more this year. Before it was on the album I listened to a YouTube clip of it on repeat countless times. Something about the way Rivers puts a song together just makes me glow inside and out. I almost chose “Ruling Me” [http://bit.ly/eTZxcT] because that one is just as good as this but I do like this one just a smidge more.

***FILMS***

THE TOP 15...

15. GREENBERG
An uncomfortable film about an uncomfortable and generally unlikeable middle-aged guy kind of falling for a sunny and optimistic younger girl. It sounds like HAPPY GO LUCKY from the driving instructor’s point of view. It kind of is. The laughs are dolorous and honest and you are really interested in what happens to these people. They seem flawed, but so steeped in realism that you just go along with it.

14. TANGLED
I will be honest I did not think this would be as awesome as it was. It is a really magical Disney princess story with sublime visuals and hearty laughs. I cried at the ending and I was left with my mouth agape during the lantern sequence near the climax.

13. EASY A
I really like Emma Stone, she is super hot, but manages to maintain it unassumingly to seem really accessible. I mention this because this role is so perfectly suited to Stone. You buy that she is an awkward teen just as much as you buy her in a sexy corset. The flick is super sweet and really funny. A near-perfect non-raunchy teen “sex”(?) comedy.

12. THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS
A film about prestidigitation that is truly magical, the visuals alone were worth the price of admission. The way the actors all gamely sell this fantasy and give it an emotional core and grounding may be the most fabulous trick of all.

11. THE GHOST WRITER
A taut crime thriller that has nothing to do with an old PBS show I grew up loving. This film is well acted, of course, but paced with such precision it is like a master class in film making.

10. NEVER LET ME GO
Never read the book. That said, I loved this film, it blew me away. I loved the acting and the languid pacing made me feel the ennui and sorrow of the lives onscreen. A dark and lovely picture that really makes you think.

9. THE FIGHTER
An interested character piece with big actor’s acting big. This is a good flick until the last half hour when it becomes an *amazing* one. I was so wrapped in the action it was like watching a real fight. I realised I had been holding my breath when the match ended. Captivating stuff.

8. TRUE GRIT
I have a real soft spot for Westerns, I do not know what it is about this genre that gets me so and this is not the place to discuss it. What I will say is that this is an exciting and well acted yet meditative piece of pulp.

7. BLACK SWAN
Dizzying and intoxicating in its pace and tone, you are not an observer but INJECTED into a drive, on the other side of madness, to achieve perfection.

6. WINTER'S BONE
Dark and night and equally frightening, this tale of a girl on a mission sticks with you long after you leave your seat.

5. SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
A hero’s tale from the mind of a Canadian slacker youth, this film uses sight and sound to include those of all ages in the anger, silliness and longing of youth. A film that is as thoughtful as it is fun.

4. INCEPTION
An analogue to filmmaking? A dream within a dream (within some more dreams)? Whatever you want to take from it, at its base this is popcorn cinema at its best. Visually arresting, emotionally histrionic and a damn good time at the cinema.

3. TOY STORY 3
The most impressive thing Pixar have achieved is not a technical one but emotional. I am a rock, but within five minutes I was already welling up with tears, things only got worse from there. Once I started crying full on half way through I did not stop until the end when I was blubbering. The film has such verve but it also just touched a nerve just so where all the emotion inside me spilled like a BP reference last summer.

2. BLUE VALENTINE
A love story in alternating time lines to show the sweet beginning and the bitter ending. Perfectly acted and edited to capture truth and humanity in a way only good fiction can. Stunning.

1. THE KING'S SPEECH
The performances are amazing in this! I bought the friendship between these two people so much I was inconsolably crying through the credits and I could not even think about the final text without starting sobbing all over again. An uplifting tale of overcoming the challenges before you and also an intimate tale of friendship and valour. A completely transcendent experience at the cinema and a film worth cheering.

Bottom 10 (harder than finding a top because I like everything)...

10. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
The best of the bunch… is not saying much.

9. Resident Evil: Afterlife
Hmm… same applies here too, this one is not bad, not good enough.

8. Dinner for Schmucks
This is just wasted talent and potential.

7. Kick-Ass
An amusing premise but Nic Cage is only great thing in this okay flick.

6. Knight And Day
I was entertained well enough, but this was so emotionally inert… ugh.

5. Dear John
I watched the beginning and then just read the story on Wikipedia, embarrassingly bad. It is too bad because I am an Amanda fan.

4. Iron Man 2
The first Iron Man was sooo good… so how did this one end up so boring? Well, for one thing they took all the charm and patter between all the game actors and just jammed in extended lifeless CGI sequences.

3. When In Rome
I love Kristen Bell and think she is super winsome and charming but that was not enough to save this laugh less comedy. Everyone in this has done and is capable of better; I have no idea why this was made.

2. Due Date
When I first saw it, I thought it was mildly boring with glaring issues of characterization and justification/motivation… and then, PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES came on television and watching how sweet, funny, and logical it was; it painted the new one in a very negative light. I was already not a fan, but being reminded of how poorly derivative it was did not help.

1. Valentine's Day
A bunch of stories, a lot of them with performers I really enjoy, all kind of just going through the motions spouting off inert lines from an awful soulless script. This is not even bad enough to be good, just a sad exercise and a waste of time.

2009

[Just so you know this is both a "Top 10 (loosely) of 2009" list and a list of things I have seen and done. I do it every year, someday I will look back and wonder what I have done with my life. All I have to do is look at this. I wish I could tag more, oh well. With that, on with the show....]

***LIVE EVENTS***

THE TOP TEN...
10. The Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers taping
Pretty funny. Good time, loads of celebrities too, but the best was Homer Simpson & Dexter and Deb newly married sitting together.

9. Billy Elliot the Musical
As if being in London's West End was not enough getting to see this smashing musical was a rather lovely cherry on top.

8. The Weakerthans
So rare is it that one of my favourite bands in the world comes around, and yet they never disappoint. Brilliant!

7. "The State" Live!
Seeing this fabulous troupe performing new material live was such a hyper real treat.

6. Ida Maria & Glasvegas
Glasvegas are better on CD, but Ida just blew my pants off with her energy and earnestness.

5. Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien Taping
Seeing Conan is always a good time. This was my first time to a taping of his Tonight show. Complete thrill. Steve Zahn was weird.

4. Charlene Yi
Based on seeing her on Conan, I went to "Paper Heart", fell in love and got to see this live show. A mix of songs, jokes & awkwardness that was nothing but a pleasure.

3. Jimmy Eat World at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona
I got heatstroke and vomited to near passing out during this show and it is still one of my favourites! Clarity in entirety, home show, etc... Amazing!

2. Weezer at The Hollywood Palladium
I have seen Weezer quite a few times throughout the years, but this was the best one ever. The most fun for me, of course, but also it seemed for the band.

1. The SF Sketchfest Tribute to: "The State".
Hearing the entire cast speak candidly of how they came together and hearing all these stories I had never heard before but really special.

I have not played a good percentage of these so my top ten reflects that. Following the top ten is the full list of games I have received or purchased this year.

THE TOP TEN...
10. Boom Blox Bash Party
Fun game that really is a party. Refined controls and modes and just such a polished party game. One of Wii's best, seriously.

9. The Beatles Rock Band (Collector's Edition)
Singing & playing plastic instruments with a mate doing the same to really fab songs... there are few greater thrills.

8. Super Mario Bros. Wii
A fun, hard game made exponentially harder and fun(er) with each human you add to the occasion. Top shelf gaming worthy of Nintendo's legacy.

7. Lego: Rock Band
Cool and fun (how many ways can I say "fun") tunes and warm visuals with the best story mode to date of any rhythm game.

6. Dragon's Age Origins (Collector's Edition)
Long game, but so richly steeped in its own lore that all the shortcomings are overcome. A brilliant RPG, full of choice.

5. The Saboteur
Lured by the visuals, I loved the story and the gameplay. Not the best at anything but damn good fun.

4. Brütal Legend
Cruising around listening to some amazing tunes was so much fun it could have been its own game. Lucky then, this had killer visuals and story to boot.

3. The House of the Dead: Overkill
Silly story, but the best I have ever played in the light gun genre. Only on the Wii, this is a fantastic game... better with two people.

2. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templar (Director's Cut)
I must love demonising the Templar’s, because I adore the story in this. The puzzles, always organic to the story, leave me craving the sequel to come out.

1. Assassin's Creed 2
Amazing story, sublime gameplay, and jaw-dropping visuals. Not a weakness to be found, as far as I am concerned, except that I must wait for the next.

***MUSIC***

It is really hard to pick a top ten so I am not counting reissues [all Beatles albums anyone?], anniversary, soundtracks, and etcetera. Still this was a really tough list to order. Basically any of these I love dearly.

THE TOP TEN...
15. Dead Man's Bones "Dead Man's Bones"
Like "Murder Ballads" this entire album is obsessed with one subject, unlike that one this is about death... and it has a children's choir. Resplendent.

14. The Sounds " Crossing The Rubicon"
Sparkling Swedish pop with electro-fuzz overtones. An album full of catchy, dance-in-your-car tunes from start to finish.

13. Carrie Underwood "Play On"
The weakest of the three. but still a great country album with some extraordinary tunes. The voice still brings tears forth from my eyes.

12. Nelly Furtado "Mi Plan"
This is not "Folklore", but it is bloody good. The first half is stronger than the rest, but the songs I like are GREAT!

11. Dethklok "Dethalbum II"
A really nice, really peaceful death metal album. It riles me up and calms me down at the same time. Brandon Small is a genius.

10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs "It's Blitz! (Deluxe Edition)"
Mellow and synth-y. Sometimes it feels like it is the first time I really heard Karen O's voice. Sensual and lovely.

9. Brooke White "High Hopes & Heartbreak"
A beautiful girl with a beyond beautiful voice. Catchy bright tunes with edgy [well edgy to me] lyrics. This album is like bubbling champagne.

8. Ida Maria "Fortress 'round My Heart"
Whether going fast or slow, all the songs on this album just get to me. This is the kind of album that makes me want to dance and sing/scream along no matter what I am or how I feel.

7. Neko Case "Middle Cyclone"
A rollicking album you imagine listening to while nursing a pint. Not quite country and not quite any thing else, but all good.

6. Lily Allen "It's Not Me, It's You"
A brilliant, honest pop album. Memorable lyrics that enchant and sometimes... even touch you.

5. Steve Martin "The Crow : New Songs for the 5-String Banjo"
Common knowledge, I *LOVE* the banjo... and Steve Martin. This album is one of those that make you nostalgic the first time you hear it. At times silly and other mournful. There is so much beauty in the banjo plinking.

4. Regina Spektor "Far"
That bewitching voice stretching out with some real Ben Fold-ian sounding production. Immensely listenable and enjoyable. The closet she will ever come to a pop album, really good.

3. The Swell Season "Strict Joy"
Bleakness, love, things broken and things ephemeral and unbreakable... whatever they sing about, it is done with such honesty. Cutting and beguiling. Strict-ly tops.

2. Miranda Lambert "Revolution"
Great album made up of nothing, but great songs; start to finish. Her first was pretty good but the music and lyrics (especially the lyrics) are just on another level on this one, a rich agglomeration of metaphor and simile.

1. Weezer "Raditude: iTunes Pass"
Easily my most listened to, my most... a lot of things and ultimately my album of the year. Over thirty pieces of Weezer goodness. I am an unabashed pop fan and this is an unabashed pop album. I can safely say there is nothing I enjoyed more this year.

THE PURCHASE LIST...
1. Ayumi Hamasaki "Countdown Live 2008-2009"
2. Ayumi Hamasaki "NEXT LEVEL"
3. Ayumi Hamasaki "Rule / Sparkle"
4. Band Of Skulls "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey"
5. Cage The Elephant "Cage The Elephant"
6. A Camp "Covers EP"
7. Carrie Underwood "Play On"
8. Dead Man's Bones "Dead Man's Bones"

***FILMS***

THE TOP 25 (I have paring down issues)...
25. The Invention of Lying
Funny and heartbreaking. Cloyingly clever. Intelligent and potentially incendiary. Love it!

24. Crazy Heart
It is equally like and unlike "Once". Good music, good film, goodness Maggie is sexy.

23. The Reader
Touching and tough film that's quality is intrinsically tied to Kate Winslet.

22. A Serious Man
A serious film, but somehow one of the funniest of the year as well. Good stuff. The Coens' at their best.

21. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D
Visually stunning and so perfectly stylized. The way they fleshed out one of my favourite books, just... clicked for me.

20. Where The Wild Things Are
Captured the feelings and emotions so perfectly of being a young boy. Completely resonant to me. I understand why people do not like it.

19. Avatar IMAX 3D
A great film and a fully, fully realised world. Three dimensional in a way beyond goofy glasses. Familiar and yet wholly original.

18. (500) Days of Summer
Even without the gorgeous Zooey bias, this takes the well tread ground of rom-com and makes it fresh.

17. State Of Play
The first film I saw addressing the collapse of print journalism and the need for it; all contained in a Cracker Jack fiction thriller.

16. Funny People
Not the funniest film, but a real look into comedians and comedy writing. It also shows the long slow growth of a man.

15. The Princess And The Frog
It took the writers/directors of "The Little Mermaid" to make a Disney animated classic on that level, in fact, it may be *gasp* better.

14. I Love You, Man
Underrated comedy of the year goes to this. This is the funniest film I saw in all of 2009. Endlessly quotable. Impossible for me not to love Paul Rudd.

11. Broken Embraces
Bittersweet and rich, like a dark chocolate. Amazing performances and warmth and humour mixed well with the darkness of the story.

12. The Brothers Bloom
Full realization of the promise showed in his first feature. A con flick with heart and soul. A fresh voice in cinema and an instant classic.

11. Coco Before Chanel
So fascinating a story and the way her fashion was visually foreshadowed was amazing! I love this film, love it. Amazing it is not in my top ten.

10. Moon
Wonderful, existential sci-fi. An amazing performance from Rockwell, who I love, and I am excited to see what next from Jones now that he has some clout.

9. Observe and Report
Terrible people being simply awful. There is no growth by the end, but it just feels so real even as exaggerated as it is. I can be laughing one second and dead crying the next. Stunning. The fact that I can find sweetness in this filth is why I consider it such a success, that and it is hilarious.

8. Paper Heart
There is a lot of hate for this, but I think it is so sweet and so charming a story. The songs, paper doll scenes and real docu-footage are incandescent. Yi is so charming and Cera plays Cera with just the right notes for the story.

7. The Cove
Message films are not usually this interesting. In the film they realise the best way to appeal to people is to hit them personally instead of appeal to sympathy. As a film it realises that rather than being taught a lesson, making a real spy film with a lesson would appeal more. It does.

6. The Hurt Locker
This is not a war film, but it is set to war. It is not at all preachy, but there is something to take from it, if you want. It is just an amazing visceral action film first.

5. Up
If you do not cry at least twice the first time you see this you are a robot. Gorgeous animation, brilliant storytelling, performances, etc... it is a Pixar film.

4. Coraline 3D
Beautiful film so perfectly suited to the medium of stop motion animation, the acting and music just effortlessly guiding this unnerving and splendid adaptation of the book. A multiple viewing must to see all the layers and textures of the film.

3. Fantastic Mr. Fox
A great film for children, it does not simplify or talk down and it deals with matters great and small, human and more... animalistic. Like I said a great film for children, but even more delightful for those whose childhoods have already been.

2. Up In The Air
A film for our time that I feel will end up being timeless. Funny and touching with bravura performances from all the leads. Playing with and against type. The only film I have seen this year that I do not think anyone could dislike.

1. Food, Inc.
This film is like a school course on-demand about socialized agriculture. The only thing I have to say if this film changed my life and how I live it. How I see the world and the choices I made. I have never been moved like I have by this film.

86. Avatar IMAX 3D*

Bonus! My *worst* films of the year!
Bottom 10 (harder than finding a top because I like everything)...

10. Brüno
Not awful and I rather liked the ending, but the comedy was homophobic so not that funny to me... nor *shocking*.

9. Post Grad
The definition of the word, "rote". Bledel is quite easy on the eyes and I had a few laughs, but once and never again is enough.

8. The Final Destination
I love the franchise, but making it 3D seemed to be the only spark of creativity. FD 2 is still far and away the most inventive and best, this is just... entertaining.

7. Angels & Demons
A poorly written book turned into a slightly better film. Interesting ideas I wish were put in more capable hands, YOU HEAR ME DAN BROWN!?

6. Hotel For Dogs
Three things: I love Emma Roberts, this flick did make me cry though I immensely dislike dogs & I long for the day Emma does good films since I will go see them either way.

5. Twilight Saga: New Moon
Weitz is a great director who keeps getting better. This is the best it could possibly be and true to the book. That said, it sucks.

4. My Bloody Valentine 3D
Terrible film. A good time in the theatre though. Good enough, anyway.

3. Grey Gardens
Well acted, but boring.

2. Jennifer's Body
Does not work as a teen drama or a comedy or a horror film. This one film fails me three ways. That is saying something.

1. I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell
Near story less; though it probably could have benefited from not having the "story" it does have; and scattered. As if they realise how dumb and bereft of ideas it is. I bet this film is shown in hell.

[Agree? Disagree? Questions? Comment? Whatever it is feel free to axe me. So convenient there is a box below where you can do just that.]

2008

This is my list of most things I enjoyed in 2008, so let's start...
[Note : I planned on writing reviews or comments for everything but then I just sort of gave up early in the year so that explains the incomplete-ness of it.]

I kind of rushed through everything since I am usually working when I work on this so mind all the errors and such.

***LIVE EVENTS***

I decided not to do a top ten for this subject but just list them...

+17 January - Ultimate Reality by Dan Deacon
http://www.last.fm/event/414903
The opening band has some really interesting sounds they were able to create so I enjoyed them. The music and visual piece was so cool and if ever the chance comes to see it you should go. It was wild and the drummers doing the live aspect was so awesome. When it was finally time for the Deacon set I was so ready to dance and that is what we all did together as an audience, it was awesome. There is such a cool party love-fest vibe at the show and I cannot commit it to words. If you have ever been to one of his shows you know how it is, if you have not, go!

+20 January - Freak and Geeks Q&A
http://dieactordie.com/2008/01/16/freaks-and-geeks-reunion-at-sf-sketchfest/
To see everyone who was there and all the people who moderated it just click the link from up above. It was so much fun to see so many of them again. It was neat to see how they looked and also listen to new stories about the show and about their lives. I knew a lot of the stories because I am such a fanatic for F&G but what was new was totally worth it. Paul Feig is such a cool cat and I loved him talking about his darling show. It was a really nice time and I feel blessed to have been able to go.

+18 February - Sia with opener Har Mar Superstar
http://www.last.fm/event/447757
The opening dude was so amazing. I had really never heard of him before but just to give you a sample, one of his dance moves is sticking his hand into his pants and then pretending to sprinkle the audience about with pubic hair. Really this guy is brilliant and the sleazy dance music is just icing on the fat balding guy cake. I want to see this guy again next time he is in town and also buy an album. As for Sia, she is such a dear character and I love her albums so much but it really works out live too. She is captivating and the stage had all these cool lights, it was really neat. She was such a sweetheart and she was so precious with her audience. Full of joy and love it was so infectious, you could see why so many people gave her presents ; which she adorably called "prezzies" ; and you can see how good she is to her fan base. Such an enjoyable show. Here are some photographs ... http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=sia+08+fillmore&ss=2&ct=6&z=t

+2 March - She & Him with Whispertown 2000
http://www.noisepop.com/2008/artist_profile.php?artist=108
I bought the tickets as soon as I found out about it because I have the hugest crush on Zooey Deschanel. I am so glad I did because even though I knew she had a lovely voice I had no idea how good. All the opening bands were varying degrees of good but her voice ... my gosh. It floored me like her face, her body and her bewitching eyes did years before. She really has the chops to take on a Jenny Lewis for nostalgia indie-pop queen. Hearing her soulful voice spill out as she pounds on the piano has a way of transfixing you. I know it just sounds like the old school boy crush coming through but I could close my eyes and just listen to her singing and it make me sad and happy and just ... emotional. This being her first show the stage presence was not much to talk about but still she was captivating. Shy but self-assured and the backing band was really solid and served the music so well. Best time I have had all year so far.

+4 & 5 March - San Francisco Giants Cactus League (versus San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals)
http://www.springtrainingonline.com/teams/san_francisco_giants_4.htm
Going all the way to Arizona to watch spring training games seems kind of silly but it was a free trip and I have never done it. I am pretty open to most things just to do them once. This was neat and it was not too hot out so it was okay and it was cool to be so close to all the action. It was too bad they lost the first game I saw. They also lost the second but not as badly. I had my hooded sweatshirt on with the hood up so I avoided the burns of a day out at the ballpark.

+11 March - Keith Urban with Carrie Underwood
http://www.last.fm/event/437561
Keith Urban was there and he was the headliner and really put on a good show but I was there for Carrie. Something about her voice just leaves me with chills up my spine. It is like her voice has such a resonance with me. She can blow me away or leave me in tears with her songs. The hour and a half with her just left me wanting more. It was not as intimate as the last time I saw her in Dixon but it was still amazing. Last time she was not as big and only had one outfit but this time it was four costume changes and just more and bigger everything. I enjoyed myself even though the acoustics from the DJ between sets gave me a headache. It was so worth it though. I had a glorious night.

+15 March - San Jose Sabercats versus Arizona Rattlers
http://events.mercurynews.com/san-jose-ca/events/show/80821138-san-jose-saber-cats-vs-arizona-rattlers
My first Arena Football League game. I had never seen it or anything before, all I knew was the other American football league, the NFL. I think the NFL is boring and unwatchable but this, this is awesome. It is really fast paced, full of enthusiasm without all the pomp and circumstance, high scores, smaller fields and just an all around improvement. I would call it a NFL 2.0 because I actually enjoy it. The match was San Jose 63 to Arizona 43. The league is also cool because they have so many giveaways and chances to get swag. They are more humble because they are smaller in audience but they make it worth your while. I had fun and am going to go again. Soon.

+22 March - San Jose Sabercats versus Dallas Desperados
http://www.arenafootball.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=20823&SPID=1563&DB_OEM_ID=3500&ATCLID=1415555
Really close game all the way through but the Sabercats' fumble in the forth led to the field goal that lost it for them. Dallas has a really good team and amazing defense but The Sabercats held their own and played like real pros. Really I think the worst problem was with zone coverage. They kept the line but WR got too much wiggle room. There should have been more man-to-man coverage or something, oh well. It was a really exciting game. Final San Jose 56 to Dallas 59.

+8 April - Jimmy Eat World with Paramore

+10 April - Panic at the Disco with Phantom Planet & Motion City Soundtrack

+17 April - Rilo Kiley with Whispertown 2000

***VIDEOGAMES***
I have not played a good percentage of these so my top ten reflects that. Following the top ten is the full list of games I have received or purchased this year.

THE TOP TEN...
10. Castle Crashers
An old school brawler with style to spare. If it was just single player it would still be charming and amusing but as a multiplayer game either at home or Xbox Live this was tons of fun.

9. Sam & Max Season One
Keeping it old school, this is a modern take on those old point-and-click adventures I love. Quite funny and a perfect fit for the Wii. I adore this game.

8. Secret of Mana
Kind of a cheat because this game is over ten years old but it was finally released for the Wii's download service so I will allow it. This is my favourite SNES game and the only Mana series game worth playing. Now easier then ever to get it going with three players, the weapon and magic upgrade and charging system are my favourite to date in an action JRPG.

7. Resident Evil : Umbrella Chronicles
I am a huge fan of the RE storyline and this game is all fleshing out of the story. It is loaded with fan service and besides that really fun co-op rail shooting. The graphics are good and shooting zombies just feels right in this game.

6. Left 4 Dead
Another game full of "infected". Really only meant to be played with friends but really focused and well done at what it does. The sound and environment and gameplay are all top shelf. There is no story but the primal feel of survival in this game is rather well done. Polished and just a lot of fun.

5. Boom Blox
A Wii game all about using the Wii Remote to manipulate physics. Well done with a cute aesthetic and the music to match. It is amazing how much gameplay they squeeze out of the physics engine.

4. Rockband 2
I love playing this game with people. It is really just a gussied up karaoke but it is such fun that I do not mind. The endless amounts of content to download each week only adds to the appeal. I love making a fool out of myself and this game is a vehicle to achieving that.

3. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Gorgeous art style and charming voice acting, there is such a quaint story and world held together with clever brain teasers. So much game not even counting the free downloadable content. An under-looked gem of a game.

2. Fallout 3
I spent about a hundred hours on this game and I am barely halfway ;if that; done with this game. A huge fully realised world where everything makes sense and is justified. Do anything you want in the game and forge your own path and your own story. Really gripping and absorbing, gory and interesting. I almost hate this game for making me devote so much time to it.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4
The gameplay ; when there is gameplay ; is perfect. The visuals have no equal. There is no draw-in, no seams, or issues. This game is the cleanest most bug free game I have ever played. The story is really truly something special. Something that could only be told in a videogame, wild and thoughtful and unwieldy. This game evokes laughter, tension, and tears. This game is a work of maddening genius. Uncompromising and requiring having played every Metal Gear game that has come before to really appreciate it. This game is a real argument for "videogames as art" and the game that makes "Next-Gen" now, the transition to the "Current-Gen". The Metal Gear Solid series is responsible for me buying the PS1, PS2 & PS3. They are system sellers. I spent nearly six hundred dollars to play this game but it was worth it.

***MUSIC***

This was really hard to pick a top ten so I am not counting reissues, anniversary, soundtracks, and etcetera. Still this was a really tough list to order.

THE TOP TEN...
10. [tie] Mates of State "Re-Arrange Us"
The way I normally make a top ten is I look at the list and pick out all the special ones and pare that down to ten, I just could not cut either of these two so they both make it in. I love anything this duo does but this is really a different approach. They worked a lot less with their signature organ and used more live piano. It was a gamble but I am still overjoyed with the results. A mature album but still with the fun I consider a Mates of State trait.

10. [tie] Travis "Ode To J. Smith"
On a new label Travis were inspired to record an album in two weeks and this is the result. Kind of a return to the brasher sounds on earlier records but with the melodies that they have come to be known for. I feel that this album is not their strongest effort but there is a lot musically and lyrically of interest. Catchy as hell and nice to have. I look forward to seeing these songs live.

9. The Hold Steady "Stay Positive"
Kind of a time trip but also modern. Musically this is a bar band with some Springsteen blended in; lyrically they tell stories in a way that reminds you of that country band you love. Really vivid tales of woe with a beat. The title track on this album is one of my favourite songs of the year.

8. Sigur Ros "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust"
Featuring their first English language track and pulling further away from the minimalist to the interestingly arranged this album almost seems like a transition album for them. Still this is very good stuff and the first track on the album is the closest they have ever come to an honest to goodness pop song. There is an embrace of folk music to broaden their sound. Really good.

7. Vampire Weekend "Vampire Weekend"
A deft blending of African pop and East Coast indie rock that really sinks into your ear. Really catchy and fun feel good music. I played this album a lot early in the year and there is not much that has topped it.

6. Sia "Some People Have Real Problems"
Sia has such a captivating and unique voice and her lyrics are so intimate and explorable. This album is odd and slow and took a while to grow on me but now I cannot think of loving this album any more.

5. Taylor Swift "Fearless"
Taking everything good about the first album and just pushing and polishing everything until it shines. The lyrics are about boys and being a teenager still but told with such honesty and sang so honestly. Really an album I can just put on anytime and shed a tear or crack a smile, often times listening the whole album both.

4. Weezer "Weezer [Red] Deluxe Edition"
The non-Rivers tracks are not my favourite but otherwise I do not understand why people hate on this album. It is rocking, fun, personal... it just sounds like a blend of all there other studio albums. There are personal tracks and geek rock, power pop and just everything enjoyable about Weezer. Weezer fans are so weird to me because they always seem to be either pre-Pinkerton or post-Pinkerton fans only. Like they do not want to evolve with the band, I do not understand it. This is a great album.

3. Ben Folds "Way To Normal"
A post-divorce album that does address divorce but in an interesting way. There is no wallowing in this album. There are some pensive moments but for the most part this is lively and interesting piano-based rock! Catchy-as-all-hell music that makes you want to sing along and dance. Just a total blast.

2. Rivers Cuomo "Alone II"
It is no secret that musically Rivers is untouchable. To me, everything he does is gold. I love this whole package. The songs are great but getting the extensive liner notes where he details the process of making music. He is so thoughtful with everything he does that it is endlessly interesting to me. This could have been my number one album of the year and for a while it was but in the end it is only runner up.

1. She & Him "Volume One"
Zooey Claire Deschanel is the most beautiful thing on this planet. Lucky for her musical career, so is her voice, arrangements and lyrics. I know that she has a classic timeless country album in her but for now she has this classic timeless album of 50's do-wop, pop-country, and sixties Ronettes type pop. The voice of an angel and lyrics that bring you to tears, an album of joy and hurt. This album brings me the closest I come to human.

***FILMS***

[My top ten reflects my top ten "films" so even though I consider "Step Brothers" one of the funniest things I have seen in my life it is terrible if you look at it as a film. Most of what I have seen this year has been entertaining and a larger percentage then usual has been really good but these are the ones that stood out for various reasons.]

THE TOP TEN...
10. [three way tie]"There Will Be Blood", "The Wrestler" & "Rachel Getting Married"
What you will notice about the three tied for tenth is that they have quite a few things in common. Acclaimed directors, strong visuals and among other things the lead roles are what are bringing the films the most exaltation. All the leads in these films are brilliant and elevate the films to first class level.

9. Rambo
All the things I mention below in this list, this film stays with you. It keeps you and your interest and gives you something to talk about when it is finished. Controversial, but going with the current phase of thought and introspection Sly the filmmaker is currently in.

8. In Bruges
Somehow one of the bleakest and funniest things I have seen in years. Written and performed with such honesty I only have praise for this film and wish it had found a larger audience. Gritty, bloody & somehow touching as well about how the inherent goodness in humanity can be lost and in some, found again.

7. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
There are so many laugh out loud moments in this film but because the humour is so closely tied to the story and the story is so full of heart this was a stand out comedy. The cast was lovely and really made this world come alive to me. It is exceptional to see a comedy so broad but have everything feel so personal at the same time. There are moments of maturity and quiet that actually stick with you like this was a Marc Forster film.

6. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button*
Probably one of the more polarizing films of the year. A lengthy run time allows for the story to come out just so ; perhaps too slowly for some. There are moments [those butterflies] that dip into "Forest Gump" schmaltz ; the films share the same screenwriter ; but this is still a thoughtful mediation on death and dying. Fincher never disappoints when it comes to actor performances, moody lighting and breathtaking visuals and this film does not change that. A moving motion picture, and also an indelible one.

5. Role Models
Paul Rudd has far too long not been the leading man, this year we get the excellent "I Could Never Be Your Woman" and this film. There are very few people who could make a bawdy "guy" flick about child care but if anyone could have it would have been David Wain. Everyone in this film is excellent but what makes the humour work so well is that story is not only window dressing but the spine and soul of the story. There is the true redemption of the two leads, this is storytelling unlike "Step Brothers" which is hilarious but soulless. Back to people who have been underrated as leading men Sean William Scott who did the leading man thing earlier in the year in the understated and brilliant small [in a great way] film "Promotion" and now here he shows his humour comes with a big helping of heart. The funniest film of the year with the most consistent laughs of anything in recent years.

4. Australia
I love long flicks, I love that they take the time to tell a real story. I love the classic film epics for the lavish productions, the visuals, the costumes, the grandeur and Australia the film has all these with room to spare. I have heard this compared to "Gone With The Wind". I do not agree, this is the Anti-"Gone..." [haha] that film was racist and this is about racial injustice awareness. Like "Gone..." the terrible "Pearl Harbor" this also puts a love story in the mist of war but this does it well by not marginalising either the love story or the atrocity of war, those other films are insulting but this is uplifting. Yeah, it drips sentimentality like a waterfall but it is still impossible not to get swept up in it all. I love this film.

3. Slumdog Millionaire
In the hands of anyone but Danny Boyle this would have been a limp treacle fable; lucky us that instead what we get is a vivid heart felt[and filled] fairy tale where good always triumphs. The road to the final Bollywood-style song and dance finale is gritty and tough but always charming, visually arresting and satisfying.

2. Vicky Christina Barcelona
Both funny and sexy in equal abundant measure. This is a film with picturesque views and concepts. It feels thoroughly modern but with a seventies bohemian sensibility of love and sex. Well cast and the cast does exceptionally well with the ; as always ; sensational Woody Allen dialog. If you have never heard his banter in Spanish this is the film to see it in.

1. Wall-E
A visual feast. A daring vision of the future. Most important for me is the love story. What ties everything together ; besides the obvious love of musicals and silent film ; is the love between two robots. So palatable, so human, so... organic? Honestly, the most human and full of emotion I have felt with any film this year. Unpandering but accessible to all ages. There is commercial film and art... this is both, seriously.

THE LIST...
[The * denotes that this was seen in the cinema]
1. There Will Be Blood*
Brutal. This is Daniel Day-Lewis' film. I love the score and visually it was such a treat. The pacing is so methodical it may turn some off but it really is so absorbing if you let it be. The visuals really stay with you and the performances stand out. I thought this was great.

2. Cloverfield*
As Godzilla was a reaction to the bomb being dropped this film is tied so much to the climate of fear following 9/11. While both bring levity along with message ; this differentiates from Godzilla by being intimate and from the point of view of a select few from the pavement instead of the overhead monster's view. Really could have been better but still effective and worth seeing. I have loads to say about it still and it inspired a lot of conversation but all would spoil it for anyone who has not seen it so I will not. Good popcorn fun worth seeing in the cinema with friends and having a chat about after.

3. Rambo*
Considered on the merit of being an action film this film somehow succeeds. I say somehow because it is a message film like "First Blood" that does not make it message clear easily. Realistic, unsettlingly so, this is a work of a true filmmaker. He spreads awareness of causes of the world, sates action film fans, later kind of disgusts them with the horrors of battle with the realistic effects of weaponry, keeps a tight run time, stays true to the character, strong motivated visuals ... I could just go on and on. Not all people are going to like it but I think their reasons for disliking it show that this is a film of considerable depth and merit. Subversive and stylised, a brilliant bookend to the series.

4. White Noise 2
This came out in the cinema over a year ago in the UK but we get it on DVD only this year. I am a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica and an even larger one of Firefly so of course I had to see it. So, how is it? The answer to that is kind of complicated but the simple answer is that, it is okay. There are some interesting visuals, nice twists and turns and a number of interesting pros. On the con list there is more, there is all the charm of Nathan being mostly subdued, the lack of realism (even implausible can be done to "feel" realistic) and much more. Better than and completely unrelated to the first one. Worth watching for fans of the leads but still just "eh".

5. In Bruges*
From a theatre writer-director comes his film debut and his background shows in the dialog. Inspired by an actual visit to Bruges you see his fascination with the place. This film is so visually arresting and interesting it is shot like an action film. Though there is quite a bit of action in the third act, this is really a human tale of the human condition. It is endlessly amusing, consistently keeping me laughing but also quite dark and quite sad. There were a number of moments that brought me to tears. Rough and rowdy on its surface but really about the good and bad in all of us. A tops film that should not be missed.

6. Definitely, Maybe*
Using the usual romantic comedy paradigm this comes out as not the usual romantic comedy. The final shot was a bit controversial but I thought the entire film stayed very true to itself and its spirit. Featuring the irresistible charm of Ryan Reynolds, it girl Abigail Breslin and three of the yummiest broads in film today ; this film made me laugh hard and quite a few times cry just as hard. This is unrealistic and full of contrived moments but still I could not dislike this film if I tried. It appeals to the optimist and the romantic in me. I think that even the most cynical could find joy in this.

7. Be Kind Remind*
Funny but with a pure soul, this is the work of a clever and confident filmmaker. It could have just been a terrible parody "Meet the Spartans" type-thing but instead we are treated to really amusing and tender film. A lot of the biggest laughs, for me, came from the nostalgia evoked by seeing the "Sweded" versions of films. A lot of its heart came from that nostalgia too. The desire for the times of VHS, the desire for the jazz age. Everyone in this film is looking for something and they find their joy in the films. Visually it is what you would expect from Michel Gondry. Zany and inventive but not arbitrarily so. I also got a kick out of all the love Fats Waller got in this film. In the film they talk about what a shame it is kids have no idea who he is and it is true. Really classy and sweet film.

8. CJ7*
Writer-Director-Producer-Star Steven Chow has gone to create a family film full of very real characters and motivation in this CG heavy science fiction fantasy farce. It sounds counterintuitive but that is how this film is. At times really dark, others sad but mostly it is very sweet and charming like the titular character who comes to this planet from outer space. Mostly a story about a boy and using the common theme in Chow's films of overcoming adversity ; mostly being poor ; but this time the focus is on a child star who acts like ... a child. He pouts, laughs, is stubborn, melodramatic and really just how a child is. CJ7 is the cutest little thing and you will fall in love if you have any soul within you. Probably the oddest film Chow has made ; which is saying a lot ; but also the most heart-shaped. Soulful and doleful experience for all ages.
